During our busy days, we may not have time to sit and meditate.  However, we can sneak into the bathroom and just BREATHE for 1 or 2 minutes.  Just breathe, nothing else...don't think about anything.  Just close your eyes and breathe.

Cinnamon:  spice

How much do I need:  1/2 teaspoon a day

Cinnamon's Job:  helps with blood flow, helps control blood sugar (slows the rate at which the stomach empties after meals), "anti-microbial" (helps stop the growth of bacteria, fungi, and yeast Candida), and increases brain activity.

Cinnamon Sources:  organically grown cinnamon, stick or powder form.

Side Note: Store in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place. Ground cinnamon will keep for about six months, while cinnamon sticks will stay fresh for about one year. Store in refrigerator to extend shelf life.  To check to see if it is still fresh, smell the cinnamon. If it does not smell sweet, it is no longer fresh and should be discarded.

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)

What is Community Supported Agriculture (CSA)?

It's a fancy word for buying food directly from the farmer.  This summer and fall my fruits and vegetables will be coming from Lake Breeze Organics  (http://lakebreezeorganics.com/).  This farm is located near Lake Michigan in Michigan.  The farmers grow heirloom fruits and vegetables.  Every Wednesday I'll travel 1 mile from my house to pick-up a box filled with in-season goodies.  The farmers will email weekly recipes and information about the items of the week.

My meat and eggs will be from a farm called Grass is Greener Gardens (http://www.grassisgreenergardens.com/).  This farm is located in Wisconsin.  The last Monday of every month I'll travel 3 blocks from my house to pick-up a box filled with meats and eggs. 

The best part, I'll be renting an apple tree this fall!!  The tree is at Earth First Farms  (http://www.earthfirstfarms.com/).  I'll also be invited to their annual harvest festival in October, which includes live music, apples, apple products, hay rides, food and drinks!

Cleaning Products

Cleaning products that don't put you at risk!   

Look for:
1. Baking soda:
-scrub shiny materials without scratching
-deodorize and extinguish grease fires
(deodorizer in the refrigerator, carpets, drains)
-clean and polish aluminum, chrome, plastic, porcelain, silver, stainless steel and tin.
-softens fabrics and removes certain stains.
2. Borax is a naturally occurring mineral, soluble in water.
-deodorize, inhibit the growth of mildew and mold
-boost the cleaning power of soap or detergent
-remove stains
-used with attractants such as sugar to kill cockroaches.
3. Cornstarch
-clean windows, polish furniture, shampoo carpets
-starch clothes
4. Lemon juice
-freshener
-clean glass
-remove stains from aluminum, clothes and porcelain
-it is a mild lightener or bleach if used with sunlight
5. Vinegar
-contains about 5% acetic acid, which makes it a mild acid
-can dissolve mineral deposits and grease
-remove traces of soap, mildew or wax buildup
-polish some metals and deodorize
-clean brick or stone
-clean out the metallic taste in coffeepots
-shine windows without streaking
-Vinegar is normally used in a solution with water, but it can be used undiluted.

Is your drain clogged?
This recipe will free minor clogs and help to prevent future clogs: Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain first, then 1/2-cup vinegar. Let it fizz for a few minutes. Then pour down a teakettle full of boiling water. Repeat if needed. If the clog is stubborn, use a plunger. If very stubborn, use a mechanical snake.

Floor cleaner and polish can be as simple as a few drops of vinegar in the cleaning water to remove soap traces.
For vinyl or linoleum, add a capful of baby oil to the water to preserve and polish.

Window and glass cleaning is easy with vinegar mixed with water. Avoid streaks by cleaning windows on a cloudy day and use newspaper to apply and wipe the windows clean unless you are sensitive to newsprint.

Chemicals found in cord blood

I hope everyone will take the time to buy products with less chemicals.  We need to protect ourselves and the future generation.  The chemicals found in a mother's bloodstream do pass through the placenta to the fetus.  Two studies, one by the Center for Disease Control and another by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) found chemicals in the cord blood of babies.  Some say these chemicals will not cause disease.  However, many people ask me how come babies are born with cancer?  I think it would be a good idea to look at our environment in order to come to a conclusion.

These chemical can lead to cancer, disrupt our hormones, interfere with our immune system, and are toxic to the brain.

How to choose a deodorant?

There are chemicals found in most antiperspirants and deodorants.  These chemicals may increase our risk for Alzheimer's Disease or Breast Cancer.  The research is inconclusive.  However, we do know that the chemicals in deodorant are harmful to our health.  So, why put something on your skin daily that absorbs into the bloodstream that may have health consequences?

Tips for purchasing a deodorant:

• Use deodorant (masks smells) instead of antiperspirant (prevents sweating). 
• It is normal to sweat and clogging your pores with toxins is not normal.
• Find aluminum-free deodorant.  
• aluminum may lead to Alzheimer's Disease and/or Breast Cancer.  
• Avoid phthalates.
• which are plastics used to help the fragrance stay on your skin.  
• These phthalates block endocrine function especially in the male fetus.
• Avoid parabens.
• which are used as preservatives in these products, could be linked to breast cancer.

What's in season?  

Sometimes it's challenging to know what is in season because everything is available all the time.  The fruits and vegetables we eat come from all over the world.  If we look at the avocado, it is shipped to us from Mexico, Chile, Dominican Republic, New Zealand, California, and Florida.  I think it's important to stop and ask ourselves...do we really need to eat an avocado from across the ocean?

According to the Environmental Working Group, only 11% of 10,500 ingredients in our beauty products have been tested for safety.  Most of the ingredients are known or probable carcinogens and reproductive toxins.  Your skin is the largest organ!  It absorbs EVERYTHING..and then those chemicals go into your bloodstream. 

Tips for Buying Beauty Products:

1.  Look for Fragrance Free products.

2.  Lemon scents usually have a low toxicity score.

3.  Look up the product on http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/ before purchasing the item.

Watch Out For:.
1.  Products that claim to say "natural"...means NOTHING.
2.  Products that claim to say "unscented" or "fragrance-free"...means NOTHING.
3.  Products that claim to say "hypoallergenic"...means NOTHING.

Try products that aren't familiar with you. Most products that are heavily marketed score higher on the toxicity scale.
